A Nightwisps Tale

Title:  A Nightwisps Tale
Author:  JlynCSS
Rating: PG
Words:  1,200

Summary:  Written for legendland challenge ~ Fairytale of the Midlands prompt.  The Nightwisps share a tale of a future Confessor finding true love.

Clarissa was a young confessor who lived in the Palace in Aydindril.  She spent her days in the cold, stark library of the wizard’s keep, its intimidating masters her teachers.  They taught her the long history of the Midlands with all its creatures of magic while older Confessors taught her the ways of justice and how to control her power.

Though Clarissa was hardly ever truly alone, she was always lonely.  No one wanted to be the friend of a Confessor – except for other Confessors, certainly no boy would ever accept a thing from her hand let alone get closer to her.  Ordinary people were afraid of Confessors, crossing the street and scurrying to hide whenever one came near.

It was only a few years since the Great War and there were hardly any others of her kind left alive with the exception of a few of the older women that had stayed behind to keep the youngest daughters of their sisters safe.  Clarissa herself had not been quite old enough to join the fight and had remained with her elders to learn and grown.  They hoped one day she would be the Mother Confessor, a great honor she knew she should be eager to accept – but what she wanted more than anything was a friend.

One evening, unable to endure the pain of loneliness any longer, Clarissa slipped quietly away from the palace walls and the confines of the city.  Maybe there were people in some distant town who hadn’t ever heard of a Confessor…just maybe she could find a friend there in some far away place.

It grew darker as she ventured deeper into the woods, the sounds of the forest coming to life as night fell – louder, scarier than before.  Clarissa was beginning to think leaving Aydindril was a mistake, frightened by the screeches and calls of creatures of the night.  A thick, low covering of clouds blotted out the moon.  How she longed for the light of the stars, knowing they would help guide her way.  She grew angry at the tears that pricked her eyes, blurring her vision making it even harder to see.

She’d been traveling for hours, stumbling her way through the trees, when she suddenly found herself on the edge of a clearing.  She gasped quietly coming to an abrupt halt.  There in front of her were the countless stars she’d been longing to see, floating like leaves on a breeze several feet above the ground.  There were hundreds of them!  Soft luminaries twinkling blue in the darkness flitted across the open meadow.  Clarissa held her breath.  She’d never seen such a beautiful sight.  She realized what she’d thought was the whisper of the wind was actually the quiet tenor of these beings.  They murmured and hummed, glowing brighter with their song.   Several specks of light floated closer, hovering in the warm air around her.    To her complete surprise, Clarissa could understand what they were saying to each other – and to her.

“You’ve come a long way” one of them said.

“A very long way,” another one added.

“We haven’t seen any of your kind here since the war,” said a third.

They knew about the war.  What kind of creatures were they?  And what did they mean… “My kind?” Clarissa voiced.  Perhaps they hadn’t see people for a very long time.

“A Confessor.”

Clarissa’s sharp intake of breath betrayed her surprise.  “How do you know…?”

“Nightwisps know Confessors.  You are a Confessor.”

“Nightwisp?” She’d never heard of them, why, with all her studies had she not learned of the Nightwisps – and why weren’t they afraid of her?

“I am Tess” the nearest one hummed, “and this is Willow and Jass.”  The other two glowed brighter and buzzed with little sounds.  “We know about Confessors…now you will learn of us too.”

Clarissa listened, amazed with the story the three of them weaved.  They were surprised she had come alone, telling her that young Confessors were always accompanied by an older, more learned Confessor who could instruct their student in the ways of the wisps… but Clarissa had stumbled upon them by accident – a truly rare occurrence.

Clarissa found them easy to talk to, and, no longer feeling the fear of the night, she opened up to them, telling them of her loneliness and desire to have a friend.  “That is what the Nightwisps are, my friend, ‘friend of the Confessors’.  One day, we will help guide a Confessor – the future Mother Confessor herself and the lone of your kind – during a dark and dreadful war.”

Clarissa stammered, feeling a chill run down her spine, “You…you...will?”  Then added solemnly, “There’s going to be another war?”

Willow came close, nearly resting on her shoulder.  “Don’t be afraid, friend, it will not be in your lifetime.”

Clarissa knew she should feel relieved, but she felt only sadness…sadness for the those who would have to suffer.  Sadness for the Confessor who must fight in such a dark time.

“This Mother Confessor, will she have a friend – someone to help her?”  She didn’t know why it was so important for her to know, but Clarissa always felt she could face anything, as long as she had a friend to help her.  She hoped the future Mother Confessor would have someone kind to help her too.

All three wisps gathered, hovering just before her though only Tess answered, her murmurs singing with a complete confidence of knowledge.  “She will have more than a friend.  She will have a love.”

Clarissa’s mouth fell open wide.  “A love?!  But that’s impos---”

“Say what you will, friend.  The Nightwisps know.  Generations from now, the most powerful Confessor who ever lived will fight in the war of darkness, and at her side will be the man she loves and the man who loves her.  They will battle the Underworld’s cruelest creatures, hand in hand.”

Clarissa sat mesmerized as Tess, Willow and Jass all shared insights into this future Confessor and her love, the Seeker:  Her power, grace and nobility, coupled with his strength, bravery and devotion.  They would be an imposing force.

As dawn began to break, Clarissa realized it was time for her to go home.  Her new friends had given her hope and she was ready to face whatever duty befell her.

One of her kind was going to find love.  True love.

Clarissa didn’t mind that it wasn’t she who would know this love or experience that blissful joy…it would come to the one who needed it most…the one who would be fighting the darkest battle, the one with the gravest need.  One of her kind was going to have what she and her sisters had only dreamed about and she couldn’t be happier.

She drew peace from that and looked forward to returning to this meadow to hear more of this love from her new found friends.

They promised she was welcome to come and visit them anytime she pleased and they would be happy to share the story with her all over again.

Took me long enough but sat and read this in bed last night. Sooo sweet, I love the whole concept of the Nightwisps, they couldn't have created anything more mystical than these glowing entities. I like how you wove this together; Kahlan's destiny was always to be with Richard, to have a lover not a mindless slave. Awww!

So look forward to more from you soon? :o)
